Study on Effect of Some Bangladeshi Medicinal Plant Extracts on in vitro Thrombolysis: An Assessment using Statistical Test

Abstract


An in vitro thrombolytic model was used to check the clotlysis effect of seven aqueous herbal extracts, viz., Cassia hirsuta, Clausena suffruticosa, Litsea glutinosa, Leea indica, Leucas aspera, Achyranthes aspera and Paederia foetida along with Streptokinase as a positive control and water as a negative control using statistical analysis. Statistical analysis such as Friedman test is a powerful tool for the characterization of the pharmaceutical process by studying the activity of variables. Using an in vitro thrombolytic model, C. hirsuta, C. suffruticosa, L. glutinosa, L. indica, L. aspera, A. aspera and P. foetida showed 31.6, 48.9, 27.25, 39.30, 37.32, 35.46 and 21.41% clotlysis respectively. Among the herbs studied C. suffruticosa and L. indica showed significant % of clotlysis (48.9 and 39.3%) with reference to Streptokinase (75.0%). Through the present study, it was found that C. suffruticosa and L. indica possess thrombolytic properties that could lyse blood clots in vitro; however, in vitro clot dissolving properties and active component(s) of C. suffruticosa and L. indica for clotlysis are yet to be discovered. Once found C. suffruticosa and L. indica could be incorporated as a thrombolytic agent for the improvement of patients suffering from atherothrombotic diseases
