In recent times, the ever increasing demand of higher bandwidth and more data rate had led researchers to explore new dimensions in wireless technology. One of the most promising fields is that of free space optics (FSO). Light is used to carry information through space withthe physical medium being the air. This paper investigates the effect on Q-factor and power loss for various advanced modulation schemes under different weather conditions. Modulation techniques namely; DPSK, CSRZ, duobinary and NRZ-OOK are compared interms of their performance at different atmospheric conditions. As the power emitted from the transmitter side is always limited, it becomes necessary to find a modulation format that would give a required power at the receiver side maintaining an acceptable bit error rate(BER). It is highly desirable to get a lower BER for a certain output power. This is one of the important factors that determines the choice of the modulation format, even though not the only one. This thesis focuses on the performance of the main modulation techniques that are feasible for FSO, in actual atmospheric weather conditions.
