Resumé

Free space optics (FSO) is an expanding technology that is gaining acceptance in an increasing number of sectors of science and industry in tropical region, such as Malaysia. It provides an effective line of sight, wireless and high bandwidth communication between two points. However, FSO does have an uncontrolled drawback which is highly sensitive to atmospheric phenomena such as environmental temperature, rain, fog, smoke, and haze. Thus, the impact could results an insufficient quality of data transmission and communication failure. Therefore, a field trial was conducted to provide a feasibility evaluation on FSO system incorporating the local weather conditions and while comply the ITU protocols: R P.1814 and R P.1817. This is achieved by observing Q factor, BER and Eye diagram that are obtained using Optsim simulator. The behaviors of FSO with different divergence angle and distance are studied, evaluated, and compared. Keywords: Attenuation, Q factor, BER, Eye diagram, Transmission distance
