Matlab/Simulink Implementation and Analysis of SVPWM, SPWM and THIPWM: A Modular Approach

The SVPWM technique has become more popular today than ever before due to the availability of fast digital systems for implementing this switching scheme. This is the preferred switching scheme for three phase inverters when compared to traditional SPWM. This paper describes a modular implementation and analysis of three popular switching methods employed in voltage source inverters: Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM), Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM) and Third Harmonic Injection Pulse Width Modulation (THIPWM) using Matlab/Simulink. This work employs a step by step approach for implementing the switching schemes. This allows for modifying the parameters of the algorithm in a simple way for analysis. Harmonic analysis of the inverter output voltages is performed using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) calculations are made. The analysis of the inverter output voltages show that the harmonic distortion in the SVPWM waveform is less than both SPWM and THIPWM.
