Abstract

In remote areas of a country where it is impossible or too expensive to access main power lines, one solution to obtain electric power is to use a small stand-alone hydro power plant. In such a situation, the turbine is been driven by a steady flow of water in a river. It is preferable to use a self-excited induction generator, due to its low cost an ruggedness. The voltage and frequency of such an induction generator in stand- alone operation are very sensitive to load changes. Various methods had been proposed to control the voltage and frequency of a self excited induction generator. This paper describes that by applying voltage source inverter in parallel to the load, the regulation of voltage and frequency can be achieved. After developing the controller, regulated voltage and frequency operation of the self-excited induction generator is simulated by using MALAB with a squirrel cage type induction generator. The aim is the total elimination of the AC capacitor bank.    Keywords: Induction Generator, Vf Control, PWM, VSI
