Factors Associated with Recurrence of Diabetes Mellitus in Bangladeshi Patients: A Cox Proportional Hazard Modeling Approach
Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a global health problem and increasing day by day all over the world, especially in Asian countries like Bangladesh. It is one of the most challenging public problems of the 21st century in Bangladesh. So in this study, we investigated the recurrence of diabetes among diabetes mellitus patients in Bangladesh through Cox Proportional hazard models. In this study, 43320 follow-up visits of 2934 patients at BIRDEM (Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders) during the period 1984–1998 have been taken into account and Cox proportional hazards modeling approach have been applied to analyze the study data with different objectives. It has been revealed that the characteristics age, heredity, education level, area, environmental hygiene, BMI, MABP and treatment contribute significantly to determine the event of recurrence of diabetes for the patients already diagnosed as diabetic in Bangladesh.
