Understanding Plagiarism and maintaining research integrity through Ethics

Abstract

Recently, some eminent personalities of prestigious institute of national importance of India have drawn the attention of all scientific community as they were accused of either form of plagiarism.  Plagiarism is defined by Office of the Research Integrity as, “The theft or misappropriation of intellectual property and the substantial unattributed textual copying of another's work. Understanding the savories of the problem, watchdog of plagiarism in India i.e. Society of Scientific Value (SSV) demanded, India urgently needs an independent ethics body with sufficient legal powers to enforce integrity in Indian science.  Present paper reviews various forms of plagiarism, its causes and remedy to prevent plagiarism.  Some recent case studies, especially, in Indian context have been discussed. The role of ethical values and committees to mitigate the plagiarism has been depicted. We hope that scientific community will understand the value of ethics and avoid plagiarism in life and work.

    Dr. Subhash C. Arya is currently Associate Professor at Electronics and Communication Engineering Department, School of Technology, NEHU, Shillong.  Before joining NEHU, he was Assistant Professor from January 2007 to February 2010 at E & I Department, Indian School of Mine Dhanbad.  He worked as a Research Scholar on Modelling and Design of EDFA for WDM and DWDM Optical Fiber Communication System during 2004-2008 in E & I Dept, ISM Dhanbad.   Dr. Arya has also worked in Aditya Institute of Technology, Delhi as a lecturer from September 2003 to March 2004. He received PhD (Electronics Engg), B.Tech and Diploma in Electronics & Communication Engineering from ISM Dhanbad, G.G.S. Indraprastha University, Delhi and BTE Delhi, in the year 2009, 2003 and 2000, respectively.  He has about 24 publications in International Journals, national journal and International / National Conferences. He is a member of OSA, OSI and IEEE EDS societies.
