In solvent extraction operations, limited solubility of extracted solvate in the organic phase results in partitioning of the later into two phases, called light organic and heavy organic phase respectively. The phenomenon is studied well and reported for tetravalent actinides in TBP systems but nitric acid third phase in TBP systems was almost neglected. In this study, nitric acid third phase was generated for TBP system and its characterization has been reported.
