This paper presents a review of investigations on boiling heat transfer enhancement on macro-, micro- and nano-scale surfaces and fluids by the authors at the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI) plus known results of other researchers. These investigations were conducted with the purpose of increasing safety and efficiency of power generating systems. The investigations were focused on such problems as effective cooling at high heat flux (1 MW/m2 and more), enhancement of the CHF, minimization of the thermal deformations, development of new heat exchanger designs, elaboration of theoretical models and engineering methods. The results are used in applications such as gas-cooled nuclear reactors with twisted metal-carbide fuel elements, targets and resonators for charged particle accelerators, high-power laser mirrors, compact heat exchangers, refrigerators and air-conditioners, and heat pipes. Keywords: boiling heat transfer, critical heat flux, surface modification, nano-relief, nano-fluidDownloads
