Yoga Practice for the Prevention and Management of Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review

Abstract


Yoga is an ancient art or science, beneficial for the development of body, mind and spirit. Diabetes represents a spectrum of metabolic disorders, which has become a major health challenge worldwide. Various ancient books mentioned the usefulness of Yoga in the prevention and management of certain diseases. Now, it has become the subject of modern scientific evaluation of this ancient evidence. The present study was planned to review the published research articles for the effectiveness of yoga based therapy for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Various research journals were referred to gather the updated information regarding effect of Yoga on diabetes. Yoga practice has a beneficial effect in patients of type 2 DM in terms of reducing the blood sugar levels and insulin resistance and increasing the sensitivity to insulin. Yoga also has a positive effect on lipid profile, management of weight and blood pressure in type 2 DM. This review work confirmed the useful role of yoga in the control of diabetes mellitus.
