Use of Air-Turbine for Removal of Impacted Teeth

Prakash Baral

Abstract

Removal of impacted tooth may need cutting of bone and splitting of tooth. It can be either done manually with the help of a chisel and a maleate or electrically by using hand a piece and a bur. We can use micromotor hand piece or air-turbine. Many dental surgeons opine that use of air-turbine (air rotor) can cause tissue emphysema that results in marked swelling of face and advocate the use of micromotor hand piece only. This research has been carried out to assess the effects of the use of air-turbine (air rotor) during removal of impacted teeth in 121 cases over a period of 2 years. The result is encouraging. There is no tissue emphysema causing swelling in all cases.
