Bio-Ethanol Production from Areca Nut Husk by Simultaneous Saccharification and Fermentation Process Using Mixed Cultures Aspergillus niger and Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Abstract


Bioethanol as an alternative source of energy has received special attention worldwide with the recent advances in biotechnology Saccharomyces cerevisiae has an efficient anaerobic ferments cellulase abundantly present in lingo-cellulosic biomass with high yield and productivity. Mixed culture fermentation can be considered as a technology for production of cellulase and further fermentation to produce ethanol, considering the low cost input and ability to utilize naturally available sources of cellulose as substrate. In this study, it was qualitatively estimated that ethanol can be produced using arecanut husk as the substrate by carrying out simultaneous saccharification and fermentation using Aspergillus niger and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Cellulase enzyme from Aspergillus niger was utilized in the hydrolysis of lignocelluloses, simultaneous fermentation to convert sugars into ethanol by Saccharomyces cerevisiae. After 7 days of fermentation by conducting qualitative test by iodine test and potassium dichromate test. Iodoform occurs as solid at room temperature has smell of antiseptic and is water insoluble.
