Water and Social Beliefs

Abstract

Water is the fundamental constituent to all forms of life. Due to its esteem importance, our preceding philosophers supported water as pious. In every society, there were certain ideas which depicted to us the importance of the water for life. In the Rig-Veda (base of Indian Hindu society), water was addressed as principal “source of energy.” River is an important source of freshwater on earth and in the Bible it was termed as source of “living water.” In Islam, origination of all living things in the universe is from water only. In Buddhism, “Water was taken as the symbol of purity, clarity and calmness.” In this research, a modest effort has been made to gain knowledge about certain social practices (related with religion and culture) related to water.
