Removal of 2,4-diclorofenoxyacetic Acid (2, 4–D) with Carbonized Peanut Shell

Abstract


Removal of 2,4-diclorofenoxyacetic acid (2, 4–D) has been studied using carbonized peanut shell (CPS). The effects of experimental parameters such as the initial pesticide concentration, contact time and temperature were evaluated. The concentrations of solutions of 2,4-D used were 0.4 and 0.6 mg/L and the temperatures were 25, 35, 45 and 55 °C. Some adsorption isotherms such as the Langmuir and the Freundlich models were applied to experimental data. It was found that the Langmuir isotherm model conformed to correlation coefficients. Thermodynamic parameters ΔG º, ΔH º and ΔS º were calculated. The adsorption enthalpy and entropy were found to be 12 438.58 J/mol and − 56.14 J/mol, respectively. This is a physical process which is endothermic. The monolayer capacity was found to be 53.19 mg/g. The carbonized peanut shell is inexpensive and can be used effectively in adsorption experiments.
